Abstract

EAP (English for Academic Purposes) can often be misunderstood by students as the type of English used for “study” and research, thus, not useful for “communication”. In our course of developing an EAP program for students at B2+ (or upper-intermediate) level (according to the CEFR) at the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) – Vietnam National University (VNU), we gradually gained more insights into the nature and characteristics of EAP and an EAP program, rather than just the simplistic initial notions of “academic writing” and “lectures/note-taking” that teachers of English in general are usually familiar with.  Our increased understanding of EAP, together with the reality of our teaching practice, had been reflected and considered in almost every course improvement that we made from 2013 to 2015. In this practical presentation, I would like to share with other teaching professionals about the nature and different aspects of EAP that we came to know and understand throughout the way, the challenges we faced when developing the EAP course in our context, and the challenges that we are facing now after five years of implementing the program.
