Integrating Teaching Syntax into Teaching Writing Skill

Abstract


There is a strong debate on that grammar should be left out from the curriculum of the School of Foreign Languages, Thai Nguyen University because students were taught too much grammar at schools. However, students majored in English at the school make lots of grammar mistakes in their pieces of writing. The researcher found that even they got huge knowledge of prescriptive grammar; they still made a big number of grammar mistakes. Hence, a syntax course has been run instead of the grammar course. Nevertheless, students’ application of the knowledge gained from the course on writing is still limited. The unanswered questions if syntax should be continued at and how to take advantages of the subject for students’ writing skill improvement are still a big concern of the school’s teachers.  This qualitative research would like to share ways the researcher integrated the syntax course and a writing course for improved essays.
