Abstract

As language is the primary means of encoding legal concepts, translating legal terms is almost an indispensable part of teaching legal English to law students, lawyers, and other legal professionals. However, this seems such a challenging task to an ESP teacher due to the numerous problems inherent in the wide divergence between English and Vietnamese concerning language, culture, and most importantly, legal system and law. Arguing how translation of legal terms can greatly contribute to the success of legal English classrooms, the focal point of this paper aims to present an in-depth analysis of the relevant major sources of difficulty that an ESP teacher may be faced with. In this regard, its final part seeks to address the discussed problems by suggesting an action plan for legal English teachers when it comes to dealing with legal term translation in the course of their work.
