Abstract

It is true that teaching grammar is one of the most popular classroom activities for K-12 teachers of English in Vietnam. Although many schools in Vietnam are using the ten-year English textbook series for Vietnamese Schools (from grade 3 to grade 12) in collaboration with two world-leading publishers – MacMillan Education and Pearson Education, there is an undeniable fact that grammar lesson are often introduced in traditional techniques with the dominance of deductive approach in most of the classroom time. However, it should be stressed that teaching grammar should not for grammar’s sake but for developing four basic language skills and thus for communication. For this reason, this poster presentation aims to supply K12- teachers with some communicative and creative games and activities that have been discussed and applied in practice at some lower-secondary schools in Lang Son through the Professional Development Project “Community practice for secondary school teachers in Lang Son” funded by Regional English Language Office, US Embassy in Ha Noi, Vietnam. Activities would be illustrated with step-by-step instructions and involve the audience, who are expected to be lower-secondary teachers using the English textbooks and following the Piloting for Lower secondary schools in Vietnam. It is hoped that the sharing will be of practical meaning to teachers at K-12 schools, and they would be able to employ or adapt those activities in their own teaching practice.
