Abstract

In-class timed writing not only offers students with their teacher's instant feedback which enables them to avoid long-term systematic mistakes but also benefit them when they take a standardized test like IELTS or TOEFL to pursue higher education. According to Clarke and Walker (1980) and Bowen et al (1985), practicing timed-writing can help students be better-prepared for writing in “stressful” situations. However, developing this habit is likely to be challenging for both teachers and students. Teachers might find it hard to have enough class time dedicated to written activities. Meanwhile, the other subject are unlikely to be confident enough to finish their writing due to lack of time, ideas and vocabulary. The article will focus on 4 techniques to deal with problems related to time constraint, students’ lack of ideas and vocabulary to facilitate in-class timed writing.
