Chunking, or the process of combining individual pieces of information into larger, more meaningful units (Neath & Surprenant, 2003), has emerged as a potentially effective teaching and learning strategy in language classroom, particularly in teaching speaking for young learners. However, little is known about this technique’s role in reading courses for students at intermediate and advanced levels. This paper therefore aims to examine the impacts of chunk-based reading, particularly on learners’ reading speed and comprehension. After reviewing current literature on reading pedagogy and chunking, the presentation outlines a multistage procedure that employs various chunk-based activities so as to enhance learners’ reading skills, and suggests how these activities may be adjusted to meet the needs of students at different levels. The paper then introduces practice resources on a range of digital platforms, including TOEIC OLPC – an online program developed by ETS (Educational Testing Service) which offers plentiful reading practice on life and work-related themes. This integrated approach is expected to shed light on new ways to exploit chunking-based activities in TESOL classrooms.
