Using Facebook to Improve English Speaking Skill for the English Major Students

Abstract


In the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, state-of-the-art technology has an important impact on education in general and English teaching in particular. In light of the importance of English, this research was carried out in an attempt to investigate perceptions and attitudes of students towards embracing technology and to examine the effectiveness of using Facebook in speaking curricular at Faculty of Foreign Languages, Hung Yen University of Technology and Education.  To fulfill the above-mentioned objectives, the combination of both qualitative and quantitative research methodology was utilized. To get direct opinions about this method, the researcher carried out randomly 55 questionnaires and 30 interviews among English-major sophomores. The results of this study indicated that the majority of responses agree that Facebook can be used to enhance their self-study ability. Furthermore, the effectiveness of using Facebook cannot be ignored that is to boosts students’ confidence in speaking activities. Additionally, it can be seen that this method is necessary for students to gain not only learning methods but also useful transferable skills to be able to successfully adapt to the 4G’s world in terms of English learning. Consequently, the students also expressed a strong desire to use Facebook in speaking skills. As the result, some suggestions were outlined in order to effectively improve English speaking ability for the second-year English-major students at tertiary education.
