Abstract


Language and culture are intertwined and cannot be separated. Hardly does one master a language but fails to have the faintest idea of the culture. Therefore, learning a new language is widely believed to involve the learning of its culture, and culture is often integrated into the language teaching curriculum to develop learners’ capacity to communicate successfully across linguistic and cultural boundaries. This paper reviews current literature relating to the combination of language and culture in an English teaching program, highlighting the fundamental role of culture in language teaching and learning, the principles of such integration as well as the level-by-level approach to learner outcomes in culture learning, namely learners’ cultural knowledge, cultural awareness and cultural competence. Based on that research synthesis, a framework for integrating cultural contents into the language curriculum of a secondary school in Vietnam will be suggested, taking into consideration local variables and age factors. In addition, a sample program for grade 6 will be provided to exemplify the framework.
