Abstract


In recent years, speaking skill has been paid the most attention for all learners from early age to university students in Vietnam. However, teachers frequently find it difficult to adapt different techniques to enhance their students’ speaking ability. Using videos in foreign language teaching classrooms has been considered an alternative to address the issue because it emphasizes more on communication techniques and helps EFL teachers stimulate and facilitate learning process. Videos have a compelling power in the language classroom. They provide instances of authentic language and can be fully exploited with the teacher’s control (Cristina Oddone, 2011). Video also provides a full context of language to help students improve their ability in speaking English (Arum Mustikawati, 2013). This research paper will be conducted with the first-year students of the academic year of 2018/2019. The experimental research is applied with two groups: The experimental group will be taught by using videos and the control group will be taught by using the textbook-based technique. The study will use videos retrieved from various online sources, which will be adjusted to the needs of the students and according to schools’ syllabus. The data will be obtained by using a pre-test given before the treatment and a post-test given after the treatment for both groups and they will be analysed for relevant results. The results of the study will reveal the effectiveness of using videos in speaking, on the basic of which proposes some teaching strategies to incorporate the use of videos in speaking activities.
