Abstract

ESP is about preparing learners to using English within “academic, professional or workplace environments” (Basturkmen, 2006). Although the course content is often mistakenly considered as typical of an ESP course, it is actually brought to existence by the awareness of the needs of the learners. Needs analysis plays such a pivotal role in the design of any language courses that it can be claimed to be the first stage of all (Flowerdew, 2013; Zhu & Liu, 2014). The analysis of needs provides information for the construction of different components of the course, including the syllabus, the materials, the teaching methodology, and the assessment procedures (Thornbury, 2006). This research paper aims to capture the main dimensions of needs and needs analysis. Specifically, various definitions of needs are to be reviewed and needs analysis models presented. Several related issues such as what information should be collected, when to conduct needs analysis, and what to do with the results, will also be sufficiently discussed.
