Abstract

Although the expression of time in languages is universal, different languages have different means of expressing time. Thai is one of the languages that differs from English in terms of time expression. One of the common errors among Thai learners of English is their use of English tenses and aspects. The current study focused on the effects of integrating reading skills and the writing production of English present and past tenses. In the pretest, 100 first year Thai university students read one piece of news report and one short story and wrote a summary about what they read. The results showed that the students produced sentences with present simple form rather than the correct past form. Tense consciousness-raising exercises were then provided to highlight present and past tense forms used in news reports and short stories. The posttest results showed statistically significant improvement. In the presentation, details and frequencies of the consciousness-raising exercises will be discussed in-depth.
