Abstract

With the presence of students of different backgrounds, English levels and personal interests, English classroom can be considered as a miniature of the dynamic society which requires teachers to be creative and flexible in implementing and adapting pedagogical techniques and strategies in teaching to engage students. This presentation aims at discussing a number of effective teaching strategies that can help make learning contents more suitable for students and facilitate their participation in classroom activities. The strategies include designing occupation-oriented learning activities and materials, effective questioning, diagnosing and scaffolding students’ learning, applying alternative assessment and giving constructive feedback. Since there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution for every classroom context, the presentation will provide participants with opportunities to reflect on their own teaching practices and pick up the strategies as well as techniques which might work for their educational contexts in order to improve students’ engagement and participation in learning.
