Abstract

Conferences and workshops toward professional development for teachers, lectures, and specialists, particularly for teachers’ teaching English of Vietnamese context in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 toward the needs of high demand of labor market become critical due to its effectiveness. How teachers are able to facilitate learners to develop their knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward their future profession becomes extremely essential.

Recent studies on workshops or conferences which have been introduced for the sake of teachers’ profession have shown that an edcamp, a free, voluntary, and participant-driven model with sharing among teachers, is considered a breakthrough in the reform. However, organizing edcamps in the context of low numbers of participants has shown new challenging tendencies.

The study on attitudes of participants (n=28) toward using an edcamp for English teachers’ professional development (female: n=17 and male: n=11; highschool teachers: n=19; university and college lecturers: n=9) indicated critical needs on improving teaching competencies such as using technology, promoting motivation, and improving classroom management skills. Meanwhile data from anonymous questionnaires with feedback and sharing notes showed the low agreement on possibilities for organizing an edcamp due to lacking of school leaders’ authority.

Findings suggested that organizing more activities toward developing profession is necessary; yet more problem resolutions and foreseen effectiveness-oriented be included while implications from edcamps should be with specific applications for professional development.
