Abstract

Teaching English as a Foreign Language in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 requires teachers to keep pace with the fast speed of technology development and the dynamic labor market’s need. According to www.edglossary.org, “in education, the term Professional Development (PD) may be used in reference to a wide variety of specialized training, formal education, or advanced professional learning intended to help administrators, teachers, and other educators improve their professional knowledge, competence, skill, and effectiveness.” However, the gap between teachers in cities and in remote areas of Vietnam is till remarkable in terms of living standard and qualifications. Are there any opportunities for teachers in mountainous regions to get PD? In what ways, a teacher of English can possibly improve his/her competence? Therefore, our rationale in this research is to explore a case study on how educational technology helps improve PD process amongst teachers of English in Vietnam remote areas. In this paper, the presenter will share her own experience as a teacher living and teaching in a poor district on the central highland of Vietnam has successfully made use of modern information technology to find out the connections with FutureLearn, Coursera, Microsoft Education Community, VietTESOL conferences, RELO, E-teacher program, GEIST; has done several online courses to strengthen her methodology knowledge and sharpen her teaching skills. Having effectively applied dozens of useful educational websites, tools in her classroom, the authors will demonstrate the progress to motivate other colleagues in disadvantaged teaching condition to be engaged with their teaching profession.
