Abstract


Teaching  English , especially for very young children should be interesting , attractive  and understandable   . Among  the various methods   for teaching  English to kids , it seems that  the TPR method   is very appropriate for  young children's  learning  second language  . TPR method means that Total Physical Response that developed by Dr James J. Asher(1977), a professor  at San Jose University .  Base on the result of his observation  of the way young children accquiring their first language , he showed  that language must be intergrated with  physical actions that  is  combined  between  listening  to and  carring out simple commands . Also , according to the general TPR theories and the author 's  teaching  experiences  , the author used TPR - telling story method to help 3-4 years - old children learning English through short  stories with the coordination of  simple sentences and actions in other words  is to teach language through activities until they feel ready to speak out . The author followed five  basic steps  of TPR telling story method  : Pre- teaching , listen and watch , listen and do , listen and do jumped orders , consolidation . The  purpose of this paper is to share  an  idea of the TPR- telling story method as a way to teach foreign language  for  young learners  , discuss and  sample activities that the author applied in the language classroom .
