Abstract

The purpose of our research was to determine the impact of the strategy “Paired Reading” for English non-major second year students on their reading fluency and comprehension of English for specific purpose (ESP) in medicine materials. In the research, we combined both quantitative and qualitative methods with the use of pre-test and post-test, checklists, questionnaires for students and compared the results of the control group and experimental group. The results of the research showed that students were enthusiastic about doing the medical reading texts in pairs and later they showed greater interest in reading medical texts and materials in English. More important, our applying paired reading in the study also helped increase medical students’ confidence in reading Medical English words and difficult medical materials. The strategy therefore could be applied in teaching ESP courses in our university in the following years.
