Abstract

Higher order thinking skills (HOTs) namely analysis, evaluation, synthesis and creation involves more cognitive learning processes as compared to others. HOTs  in language classes are of great importance for university students in general and Thuy Loi university students in particular, as they help them have cognitive  academic language proficiency (CALP) to apply in their academic studies. However, as a matter of fact, it is noticeable that numerous classroom activities solely activates the most two lowest levels of cognition i.e remembering and understanding and a variety of language teachers do not give adequate attention to HOTs. Accordingly, this paper will provide an overview of HOTs in English classes and some examples of the application of HOTs in designing speaking activities for the first year students in English classes at Thuy Loi university so that the audience, English teachers can be aware of and utilize in their classes.
