Abstract

Classroom interaction has been considered one of the most important pedagogical research topics in language classrooms in recent decades. Currently, bilingual programs in which English is used as the medium of instruction are becoming popular in different parts of the world. English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is the use of the English language to teach another subject. This trend is booming in many countries, especially in Asian nations. Recent research on EMI has gradually shifted from evaluating the effectiveness of EMI in terms of language and content learning outcomes to exploring classroom interaction in detail to gain insight into effective pedagogy and teacher education. This paper aims to provide a review of the conceptualization of classroom interaction. Besides reviewing definitions of classroom interaction, this paper also focuses on how English language teaching classroom interactions have been researched in the literature. Then, researches in relation to classroom interaction in classes that use English as a medium of instruction (EMI) are presented. From that, the context of an EMI class in a Vietnamese university is described. The teacher-student interactions are analyzed in order to propose solutions to better implementation of EMI classes.
