Abstract

In this workshop, we will explore how to use differentiation in a large, multi-level classroom to engage students with different learning styles. This approach will make the classroom into more of a group of active learners rather than a one-size-fits-all group of passive students. Learners have diverse abilities, interests and learning traits, all of which need to be addressed in the way we teach. As research is ongoing about differentiation instruction, and it is not without its challenges to implement, it is still a dynamic, more student-centered method to try in the classroom. We will try out different activities in this workshop to see what you might want to try in your teaching. One more issue I’d like to highlight in this kind of classroom is how “teacher talk” is decreased and comprehensible input is increased without the need to use as much L1, in this case, Vietnamese, in the classroom.
