Abstract

The use of e-portfolios for formative assessment in writing has been well supported by literatures, yet, it is still underexploited in the context of Vietnam. Having an inclination to examination, most Vietnamese people believe that doing well on exams guarantees great opportunities; thus, it is then not surprising to see that curriculums are saturated with tests such as short and long quizzes, periodical and summative tests. Unfortunately, test-oriented curriculums bring negative backwash towards teaching and learning writing and affecting students’ overall achievement. To address the issue on the negative backwash, laborious and ineffective error correction, and other emerging issues relevant to the traditional formative assessment, group e-portfolio project was initiated to replace periodic tests in an academic writing held in university in Hanoi, Vietnam. Key changes include delayed assessment, collaborative writing inherent in group writing, the use of online platforms in completing projects, experiential and personal learning through project-based learning and teaching (PrjBLT). After piloting semesterly since 2015, positive developments both in teaching and learning have been achieved. Teachers have expressed a great sense of improvement in classroom management and students’ attitudes towards writing have significantly improved which helped them achieved effective writings.
