Abstract

Thanks to Project 2020 which aims at bringing the English teaching and learning in Vietnam closer to the regional and international standard, the New English Textbook has been developed with a project added after each unit.

Theoretically, projects transforms the roles of students and teachers in ways that benefit all, making teaching and learning more interactive and communicative (Brown, 2011; Harmer, 2007). However, when applied in Vietnam, projects causes a number of difficulties to teachers due to class size, multi-leveled students, students’ engagement, timing, teacher’s lack of knowledge on PBL and on management skills. These were the same as findings of several studies on common problems of teaching projects (Marx et al., 1991, 1997).

The workshop starts by reviewing how to teach projects globally. After investigating what makes PBL difficult in Vietnam, participants will work together to find out ways to tailor projects to make the better use of projects in the local curriculum.
