Abstract

The development of different language learning apps has been beneficially influencing language learning practice. They create more chances for language learners to be exposed to the language learning environment. A range of pronunciation apps like ELSA Speaking and Speaking Pal have been developed to improve speaking and pronunciation and become popular among English language learners. While these commercial apps are usually costly, they also provide free trial versions. These versions and other free apps may benefit students who are at the low language level and financially disadvantaged. This action research focused on a group of twenty-four first-year undergraduate students who were at pre-intermediate and poorly funded. Different apps were introduced and used by the students within seven weeks in a fifteen-week intonation course. Pre-tests, post-tests, questionnaires, and interviews were employed to gather data. The results reveal that the apps improve learners’ pronunciation, learner autonomy, motivation and develop learning strategies. Some pedagogical implications will be drawn for teaching pronunciation and language teaching.
