Abstract

Listening plays a very important role in teaching and learning a foreign language. In classroom, listening comprehension skills vary from student to student due to their different learning styles and ability. Therefore, providing suitable materials to keep students’ concentration on listening and improving their listening skills is a big challenge for teachers. According to Gonzalez Moncada (2006), materials are an essential component in teaching. And using video materials in listening lessons has been considered as one of the most effective way to develop students’ listening skills; to provide information; to present or reinforce language; to stimulate language production. (Gallacher, L.). Because of these reasons, the researcher decided to conduct a study into exploring the effectiveness of using authentic video materials in teaching listening for first year Business English students at National Economics University. In this study, observations and a questionnaire were used to collect data. To investigate the effect of authentic videos in teaching listening skills, a research was carried out in two phases, and the collected data were compared and contrasted to confirm the fact that students were really interested in learning listening skills if authentic videos were used in listening lessons. From the investigation and analysis, suggestions would be given to teachers and students as well to enhance the use of authentic videos so as to develop students’ listening skills.
