Abstract

In the global integration context, the more developed a country is, the more diversified international relations it is engaged in. This results in the integral involvement of interpreting career as the linguistic and cultural bridge serving diplomatic and cooperative purposes. In reality, training as an interpreter seems to challenge learners by strict requirements of advanced skills, of which fluency and accuracy are always highly appreciated. Therefore, this study looks into the evaluation of Shadowing as a technique to empower English majors’ interpreting capability. To begin with, a literature review in regard of interpreting theory attached with Shadowing introduction is analyzed as the foundation for the research. The main findings and discussion focus on the study into effects of Shadowing in interpreting classes of Business English majors, National Economics University. In total, there are 80 third year participants contributing to a fifteen-week study during one semester of Interpreting 1 class. Three research methods are employed, namely semi-structured interview, diary and Teacher’s field notes. As positively expected, the results shine up that Shadowing helps to improve fluency, accuracy as well as native-like performance with melody and pronunciation enhancement. Due to limited official teaching materials in training, this study can be considered as a comprehensive material for interpreting theory and shadowing practice for learners and teachers.
