Abstract


As a pre-service teacher, attending teaching practicum is considered as a compulsory part of the training program which is widely considered as the major opportunities for the students to acquire the “practical skills and knowledge needed to function as an effective language teacher” (Jack C. Richards & Graham Crook, 1988) under field supervision of local high school teachers. This paper only concentrates on investigation of students’ attitude towards the effectiveness of teaching practicum for English as a foreign language (EFL) taken by pre-service teachers at several universities in Vietnam in terms of curriculum, practicality and challenges under the view of. The study was conducted through survey and interviews whose qualitative data was obtained from 526 junior and senior students from 4 universities. The hypothesis of the study was that pre-service teachers are constantly facing differences between what they are taught on tertiary level and what they are expected to perform at appointed high schools. Findings indicated that teacher trainees expected to be able to apply more of what they have been taught into real contexts (such as new teaching methodologies and the application of technology in language teaching). Teacher trainees also expected immediate and effective partnerships between university and school authorities to facilitate during their practicum.
