Abstract

So far, the ethnic minority students in Vietnam have been taught English grammar mostly with the Grammar Translation Method, which leads to the fact that many students with a considerable knowledge of grammar are not capable of using the language they learnt to communicate in real-life situations. This study is an attempt to investigate not only the students’ attitudes, difficulties confronted and their suggested solutions to English grammar learning more effectively but also the  difficulties faced by teachers in teaching grammar communicatively and their recommended solutions. To achieve this aim, a survey has been done by providing a questionnaire with open and close ended questions for 18 teachers of English and another one for 215 ethnic minority students at Teacher Training College, Medical Secondary School and Vocational Training College in Ha Giang province. The findings revealed that both students and teachers encountered certain difficulties in grammar lessons adopting the Communicative Approach. Based on these important findings, recommendations for overcoming the challenges in teaching grammar communicatively to students in ethnic minority setting were given.
