Abstract

Academic writing or Essay writing in particular has been a big challenge for students due to their formality, complexity and the boring nature of the subject. A case study on the use of creative writing ideas is conducted to reveal the connection between free writing and academic writing. It is to contribute a new approach towards the teaching and learning of essay writing. The idea is adapted from The Hadfields (1990) who believe that writing can be one of the most enjoyable and satisfying activities for teachers and students to do together in a classroom, especially in a foreign language classroom.

This case study is conducted in an essay writing class of 2nd year business students at the National Economics University. The study applied qualitative research method with the use of in-depth interviews, class observation and assessments of students’ weekly writing assignments and final writing papers. The results show that essay writing classes have been made more fun and stimulating through some creative ideas of building vocabulary and developing ideas.
