An Action Research on Using Plickers in English Language Classrooms at a High School

Abstract


Providing immediate feedback with the aim of improving students’ performance is very important in language learning and teaching. This action research, therefore, investigates the effectiveness of using the classroom response system Plickers, which is a technology based tool, in improving students’ learning. Plicker tickets are applied in English Language classrooms at a high school. Then, a questionnaire about Plickers’ effectiveness is conducted to collect data from 180 students at the school. The findings reveals that Plickers is a simple, powerful tool that allows teachers to collect evaluation data in real time without using any learner's handheld device. The results also show that the use of Plickers improves students’ participation; saves the learning time, guarantees equal participation opportunities, and creates fun and exciting learning environment. From the study, language teachers are encouraged to integrate technology tools such as Plickers in their classrooms to help them assess the effectiveness of their teaching and their students’ learning.
