Abstract

There are a variety of approaches, from psychological aspects to methodological perspectives, aiming at enhancing the quality of language education. In terms of linguistics, the key role of corpus in the improvement of English language teaching and learning motivation has been proved for years (Kennedy, 1998). The analysis of motivation and learning theories, such as structural equation modelling, reveals that the mutual relationship between motivation and vocabulary cannot be denied, with the fact that there were “crucial impacts of motivation on lexical resources”, and the learning motivation could be enhanced through the mastery of essential words (Zhang, Lin, Zhang & Choi, 2017). Based on this framework, through an empirical project in the local contexts, with qualitative and quantitative methods, including three phases [1] analysing the corpus (Longman, American English, British English and British National Corpus) with academic word lists (Coxhead, 2000) to select the core words, [2] applying these core words in teaching academic English reading courses to a group of 40 college students during the semester and [3] evaluating the learning outcome and students’ satisfaction through written progress tests and a questionnaire, the researcher has explored potential impacts of corpus in enhancing students’ language learning, especially raising students’ vocabulary learning performance and motivation. In this paper, the researcher provides overview of this corpus-based approach, with focuses on rationales, principles and guidelines for boosting students’ motivation in English language learning.
