Abstract

This workshop is based on the assessment of the English communication component of two separate arts-integrated puppet making and puppet theatre workshops for secondary school students conducted in English. The four C’s of 21st Century Skills, are some of the most pedagogical strategies in today's learning environment. (The four C's are Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication.)

The students were assessed for the development of English Communication based on the Model Cornerstone Assessment (MCA), National Arts Standards, and the National Council for Drama.

The workshops were conducted in Hanoi English and the maker spaces provided hands-on, creative ways to encourage the students to communicate in English in order to design, experiment, and build large hand puppets and a portable theatre for use in future Community-Based Learning (CBL) projects in English.

It was observed that using standardized prescreen questions and national MCA assessment guidelines would assist an educator in a STEAM and CBL program and to develop an effective program to improve English communication skills

Moreover, the skills developed dramatically changes the nature of the discourse in a communicative English class to enhance communication to improve 21st Century Skills.
