Abstract

The present research conducts a small-scale study to examine how well corpus can be used as guidance to assist students in the process of essay self-revision. The researcher aims to explore students’ attitudes towards corpus as well as their evaluations of the advantages and disadvantages of using the corpus to correct lexico-grammatical errors in writing. The instrument chosen for the study is Corpus of Contemporary American English, the large and freely available corpus of English as of now. Questionnaires and interviews are employed as a quantitative and qualitative method to collect data. 14 people including second-year and fourth-year students participate in this study. The findings from this study reveal that the strengths of COCA outweigh its weaknesses. Some advantages can be listed as a user-friendly interface, a large number of example sentences, or authentic language. Besides, the disadvantages include technology malfunctions, time-consuming procedures of data interpretation, or failures to solve complicated errors. Despite the drawbacks of COCA, students still express their positive attitudes towards the corpus and consider it as a powerful tool to correct their essays in the future.
