Abstract

This study investigates the vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) employed by English major students at School of Foreign Languages (SFL), Thai Nguyen University (TNU). The methodological approach adopted for this study is survey. The researcher attempts to (1) investigate the vocabulary learning strategies used by the first year and the second year students at SFL, TNU (2) find out differences in the use of VLSs among the students of different language proficiency levels and those of different language learning experiences. Two data collection instruments are a questionnaire developed from the model of Schmitt (1997) and an interview. The study was conducted with the participation of 150 English major students at SLF, TNU.

The results of the study indicate that all the VLSs listed in the questionnaire were used by the 150 participants. However, the participants used VLSs at “medium used” level.  Furthermore, there emerged some variations in the employment of VLSs among students of different language proficiency levels and those of different language learning experiences. It was found that the more proficient learners used VLSs more often than the lower proficient ones. Additionally, the more experienced participants showed much stronger preference for VLSs than the less experienced ones.

In conclusion, it is suggested that teachers should make learners aware of their own responsibility in vocabulary learning and expose them in different approaches in enhancing vocabulary acquisition.  Teachers should also create environment and give students opportunities to practice VLSs.
