Abstract

The International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) is viewed as one of the most widely used and internationally recognised tests to measure test-takers’language proficiency in terms of listening, reading, writing and speaking skills (Coffin, 2004). In order to highly accomplish the IELTS academic writing module, it is essential that the candidates should be well aware of its interpersonal expectations which are implicit in the IELTS assessment criteria (Nakamura, 2009). In this paper, the main focus is on the investigation into the interpersonal meanings used in IELTS high scoring academic essays in light of the Hallidayan’s framework with a view to exploring how candidates establish relationships with IELTS examniners through linguistic resources successfully, and highlighting some pedagogical implications for expressing writers’ opinion and attitude, thereby making practical contributions to score enhancement in their essays.
