Difficulties in Impromptu Speaking Activity Facing Second-year Students Majoring in English and International Economics

Abstract


In the recent decades, communicative language teaching approach has been the leading trend of education, resulting in the increasingly important role of oral skills. While prepared presentations received much attention, impromptu speaking activity seems to be ignored in the field of research. In an attempt to explore the current situation of this learning activity applied for second-year students majoring in English-International Business, University of Languages and International Studies, Hanoi, this paper is aimed at investigating the common difficulties facing students when giving an impromptu speech and the causes of these problems as well as the suggested solutions. To reach the aforementioned aims and objectives, survey questionnaires and interviews were employed in the study. Participants of the study were 3 teachers and 58 students of English-International Business program. The findings showed that there are 5 major difficulties facing students in giving impromptu speeches. The content-related and skill-related reasons, along with some solutions for these difficulties were also revealed. In addition, the study offered several pedagogical suggestions for the implementation of impromptu speaking activity.
