Abstract

This poster presentation demonstrates the relationship between students' needs, interests, goals and expectations for the Hanoi English Olympic Contest and teacher's role as a motivator. Based on some literature addressing the issue of students' motivation in the classroom, I will refer to a few main authors that have done research on this field, coming up with the most important theories and thoughts, as well as some of the most controversial ones. Next, I will explain how this can be applied to the context of a primary school. Specifically, I will be focusing on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for 5th grade learners as they affect learning and try to discover whether or not 5th grade students at Doan Ket primary school fall in the category of those who are motivated by extrinsic rewards rather than those who are called intrinsically motivated students. Finally, I will summarize generally what students' needs and interests are so that teachers can make lessons more of a science than a hit or miss attempt at education, and certainly, more enjoyable for 5th grade students.
