Design Thinking as a Methodology to Develop Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills among Students

Abstract


In recent years, Design Thinking, a design methodology, has attracted keen interests of educators in different disciplines for its advantages in developing students’ creativity and problem-solving mindset (Lor, 2018). This process introduces a concrete and flexible process of five steps: from the empathy of a phenomenon to find out the potential problems, to the proposal of optimal solutions. As compared to Problem-based Learning (PBL), which is also a popular approach among educators worldwide to enhance students’ problem solving skills and other essential skills in the 21st century (Duch et al, 2001), Design Thinking  seems to offer more learning opportunities for students. In this workshop, the presenters will demonstrate five typical steps of Design Thinking including Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test and how to integrate this process into a lesson in a higher education context to develop students’ creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Then, the participants will have an opportunity to practise using the five stages of Design Thinking to solve a practical problem. Finally, there will be a small discussion regarding other possibilities to apply Design Thinking to different English teaching activities and different contexts.
