Abstract

Globalization and internationalization insist requirements of English, thus English education innovation in Vietnam. Many nation-wide projects, academic and research activities on this issue have been conducted. However, the problem still remaining is that while a noticeably increasing number of Vietnamese students are learning English, many of them have limited English ability. In such a situation, Communicative Language Teaching has been applied in Vietnam for about 35 years, since 1984, but it seems that this English teaching method has encountered numerous difficulties; most Vietnamese students cannot communicate nor use English efficiently. The 2020 National Foreign Language Project, with the nation’s big sum of money and energy, seems not to achieve the objectives that Vietnamese students can use and speak English competently. This issue concerns many educators, English teachers, linguists and researchers. The current qualitative and quantitative research conducted in a Vietnamese University including interviews, observations and questionnaires, with 29 English classes, 440 students and 37 teachers of English, shows that EFL Collaborative Learning (CoL) can increase Vietnamese students’ English learning, competence and communication, as EFL CoL can (1) bring numerous benefits to Vietnamese students of English; and (2) solve the difficulties that CLT has confronted in Vietnam’s EFL context. The findings raise the awareness of EFL CoL importance and its application in English education in Vietnam, from many educators, English teachers and learners, linguists, and researchers; they also significantly contribute to the theoretical and practical renovation and development of English education in Vietnam, to substantially increase Vietnamese students’ English ability.
