Abstract

Non-canonical structures are frequently encountered in English texts. The translation strategies solving these structures and their effectiveness must therefore be examined thoroughly. This study is conducted to examine the level of effectiveness of the proposed strategies and the level of satisfaction among third-year students after experiencing lessons about the methods totranslate non-canonical structures from English to Vietnamese. By examining and adopting translation strategies proposed by Peter Newmark, the author applies and introduces the methods into the classroom setting. Participants are students from 2 classes studying Translation Practice at ULIS-VNU. After being introduced the methods of translating the non-canonical structures from English to Vietnamese as well as exercises to familiarize themselves with the aforementioned methods, the classes partake in weekly tests and a final assessment test at the end of the semester. The translations are assessed and analyzed by the author and a group of 3 other teachers. The results prove that the methods can be utilized in the classroom setting for university students and that they can assist practitioners in solving non-canonical structures in effective ways.
