Abstract


A graphic organizer is also called a knowledge map, concept map, story map, cognitive organizer, advance organizer or concept diagram. It is a visual and pedagogical display which is used to illustrate the relationship between knowledge, concepts or ideas in the process of teaching and learning ("Graphic organizer", n.d.). In English classes, graphic organizers serve as visual aids to facilitate teachers and students. It is worth applying graphic organizers in English language teaching since the number of students having visual-spatial learning style represents not a small proportion – 33%  according to Busan (2014). Meanwhile, teaching speaking skill plays an important part in teaching English in general and teaching English at Thuyloi university in particular. Therefore, this paper will provide an overview of graphic organizers  in  English classes and the evaluation of benefits and difficulties in applying graphic organizers in speaking activities for the first year students in English classes at Thuy Loi university, so that the audience, English teachers can be aware of and utilize in their classes.
