The use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) for transnational communication and engagement in diversity is rapidly growing in this globalized era. The primary purpose of this study was to observe the use of ELF during online communication along with the communication strategies used in authentic interactions between ELF users from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds (Seidlhofer, 2003; Björkman, 2014). Transcultural exchanges during online interactions were also observed. Conversation analysis was applied to recorded spoken ELF interactions. This presentation will reveal the communication strategies used by ELF users and provide an overview of transcultural exchanges seen in online communication between Japanese university students and non-native English speakers from the Expanding Circle (Kachru, 1985). Participants’ perceptions of these exchanges were collected during post interviews. Significant findings will be discussed along with insights into the characteristics of communication strategies used during ELF interactions and transcultural exchanges. The presentation will conclude with suggestions and examples of how such understandings of communication strategies and transcultural exchanges can be meaningfully incorporated into ELF pedagogic practice.
